I notice the use of Anglo-saxon letters within current postings. How do they work and do I need to download a special font?

you don't need a special font to my knowledge. Here's how to key O.E. characters in:

Alt keys:

Alt 0230 gives lower case aes æ
Alt 0198 gives upper case aesc Æ
Alt 0240 gives lower case eth ð
Alt 0208 gives upper case eth Ð
Alt 0254 gives lower case thorn þ
Alt 0222 gives upper case thorn Þ

I think I've got it! I have to hold down the alt key and use the 10-key to enter the digits then release the alt key.

Has anyone figured how to use the ALT key system with a laptop? I don't have a separate numbers keypad that desktops have. It would be fantastic to crack this one.

I use microsoft word for my normal correspondence and it has an "insertion" menu. "Symbol" under the insertion menu will provide a menu of symbols and letters including Anglo-Saxon letters. I then create a microsoft word file, write my message, and then paste it into the message box here at the Boar's Helm Pub.
